Fire escape hoods:

Providing a person with clean, filtered air in a smoke-filled environment.

How do fire escape hoods work?

Fire escape hoods provide 15 minutes of clean, filtered air in smoke-filled environments, helping individuals stay safe until they can be rescued or reach safety.

  • Design: The hood fits snugly over the head with a tight seal to prevent smoke from entering.
  • Air Supply: Air is filtered through the hood, removing toxic gases and providing clean air for up to 15 minutes.
  • Visor: An anti-fog visor ensures better visibility in hot, smoky conditions.
  • Shelf Life: Fire escape hoods require no maintenance and have an eight-year shelf life if unopened.

When we use fire escape hoods

  • Usage: Fire escape hoods are used to assist individuals in smoke-filled areas or to keep them safe until rescue is possible. They provide crucial extra time for safety.
  • Training: All firefighters are trained to assess situations and determine if a fire escape hood is needed. However, wearing one is voluntary; firefighters will explain its use and let you decide.

How to put on a fire escape hood

The hoods are very easy to put on, and fit everyone, from small children to adults. If you need to put on a fire escape hood a firefighter will give you as much help as you need, but it’s very simple.

  1. Preparation: If you wear glasses, remove them. If you have headwear like a hijab or turban, remove it as well. This has been discussed with cultural and faith leaders and is acceptable in emergencies.
  2. Fitting: A firefighter will assist you in pulling the hood over your head. They will then adjust the hood to create a secure seal.
  3. Seal Test: To check the seal, you will be asked to place your hand over the filter and breathe. If a vacuum is created, the hood is fitted correctly.

What happens next

  • Guidance: After putting on the fire escape hood, you may be guided to safety or a firefighter will stay with you until a safe exit route is available.
  • Air Supply Monitoring: The hood’s 15 minutes of clean air will be monitored. If necessary, the hood can be replaced with a new one before the air supply runs out.
